After 10 years in various restaurant and hotel management positions entrepreneur, Paul Campbell, decided to live his dream of setting up his own catering company in Bristol. In December 2011 he took out a lease on a premises with a small but well equipped kitchen in Brislington. His idea was to run a cafe for the local community whilst developing a sandwich platter, buffet lunch delivery service and contract catering for businesses in Bristol. He called his Bristol catering company “A Fair Shot”.
Paul says of his motivation for starting his business, “I always wanted to run a catering company that pays its staff a fair wage and provides staff benefits such as medical cover. It always seemed absurd that restaurants and cafes wouldn’t use local suppliers, so wherever possible we buy local and pay a fair price and we support Fair Trade. The name A Fair Shot seemed appropriate. And, we have grown based on those principles.”
The first years were gruelling with early mornings often starting before 6am but slowly A Fair Shot built a loyal cafe trade and a buffet catering company with a regular, satisfied client base. By late 2013, even with an extension, it became apparent that the small kitchen in Brislington would not be able to cope with catering for the cafe, the business buffet and office lunch delivery service. Paul put out the word and set about looking for a new premises.
In early 2014 Paul was approached by the managers of Whitefriars, an office block that is home to 600 businesses and 2000 staff on the doorstep of Broadmead, Bristol. They had a kitchen and a cafe in central Bristol that was in need of expansion and refurbishment- would A Fair Shot be interested in setting up the catering company there?
In June of 2014 with a new kitchen and a freshly redesigned cafe, A Fair Shot opened its doors in Whitefriars. The cafe retains its local feel serving freshly prepared sandwiches (with Trackleman’s chutney) and paninis, homemade soups, hot lunches and salad boxes. There is a trained barista to make Fair Trade shots of espresso, cappuccinos & lattes to take away or sip on the sofas. And ‘Fruit Hit’ juice drinks represent the Fair Trade options for cold drinks.
Meanwhile the office buffet catering and delivery service is steadily growing with enquiries coming from offices in the centre of town and also from the business parks in Aztec West and Filton.
“Now that we have relocated to the centre of town it makes sense to develop the business into Clifton and North Bristol whilst maintaining our existing client base.”
With business booming in Bristol if you need an office buffet caterer for your training days, office parties or corporate catering events why not try Paul and his company A Fair Shot?
